On April 1, thousands if not millions of New Yorkers won't be able to pay rent. Over 80,000 of us have signed a petition to the Governor demanding that he cancel rent. But April 1 is tomorrow and nothing has been done. It's crucial that the Governor, state legislators and the federal government listen to and act on what tenants are saying.
One powerful tactic to make them listen is a rent strike, where tenants withhold rent to demand action. On April 1, at 10am on Facebook Live we are releasing a Rent Strike Toolkit, which has information on the history of rent strikes, how a COVID-19 rent strike is different from traditional rent strikes and what’s involved with organizing a rent strike. The toolkit also includes sample versions of signs, flyers, letters and other documents you can use to help organize a rent strike in your building.
RSVP for a virtual press conference on Wednesday at 10am, as we announce the toolkit, and call on the Governor to Cancel Rent!
